Save a Stray Foundation

Save a Stray Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization created in 2015 with the goal of reducing the overpopulation of stray and feral cats roaming the streets of Maricopa County, Arizona.

Our focus is to educate the population about the importance of spaying and neutering household pets and how a non-lethal and humane cat management program can be implemented via “trapping, neutering and returning” free roaming and stray cats in the community.

The organization’s founder, Sue Harrington, has been doing TNR (trap, neuter, return) on her own since 2005. Since then, Sue and other volunteers have TNR’d hundreds of free roaming cats and have placed the adoptable cats and kittens into good homes through partnership with adoption organizations. Our mission is to reduce the suffering of the stray and feral cats across the county that lack food, water, shelter, and medical care. After the cats are TNR’d, they are either adopted out or are returned to their colonies and are provided with food and water by volunteers on a daily basis.

Why free roaming cats need our help:

Left unaltered, free-roaming cats will continue to reproduce, creating more homeless kittens to perpetuate the cycle. Through TNR, feral cats are able to live out their lives without adding to the homeless cat population. According to scientific research, free roaming cats live healthier lives after being altered. TNR programs throughout the country have successfully stabilized and significantly reduced the overpopulation of free-roaming cats.

How can we help?

  • We can assist individuals, homeowners associations, businesses, and mobile home parks with how to implement a cat management program by providing information, training, and coordinating clinic appointments to have the cats altered.
  • We can also provide brochures, literature, and speakers to educate and bring awareness in the community.

How can you help?

  • Spay or neuter your pets and educate others about the importance of spaying and neutering.
  • We are in desperate need of donations to help with the costs of cat food, transportation, spay/neuter fees, and other supplemental veterinary care that the cats might need.
  • We are always looking for volunteers to aid with trapping, pre-veterinary care, transportation to the clinic, and the returning of the cats to their colonies.

Met an amazing woman today in a parking lot in Chandler, AZ today! She put my mind at ease about a cute little Orange kitten and his Big Brother! What a great Mother’s Day present, glad I had to work today or that meeting would not have happened.
